Currituck County Poised for Big Growth

With the new sewage treatment plant in operation for over a month, signs point to increased development.  County officials believe that Currituck County is poised for big growth as the treatment plant makes it easier and more affordable for commercial and residential development in and around Moyock.
While the discussion had been in the works for several years, the Currituck County Board of Commissioners finally agreed to borrow $2.7 million to build the plant set on 68 acres in Moyock.  With that in mind, Currituck County Manager Dan Scanlon feels confident that the project will pay for itself fairly quickly.  In a recent article in the Outer Banks Voice, Scanlon believes that “the system should be self-sufficient and the loan paid off in three years.”

Property owners can connect to municipal sewer services with a tap fee of $5,500 per 250-gallon increment of use for all customers, commercial or residential.  Additionally, customers can estimate their monthly fees to be somewhere around 1.5 times a customer’s average water bill.

The treatment plant that cost about $2.6 million to build currently processes 99,000 gallons of sewage per day with expansion expected over the next few years as development in the area continues.  In the aforementioned interview with the Outer Banks Voice, currituck county Economic Development Director Peter F. Bishop stated the plant is “just the first phase of a facility that eventually will be able to handle up to 600,000 gallons a day to accommodate future growth.”

As for future development, with the treatment plant situated just two miles from the Virginia/North Carolina border, opportunities for hampton roads business as well as commercial and residential development in and around Moyock are increasing as is the value of the land in the same areas.
